October 24, 1995 - Marilyn Manson and Sweet Dreams
A day after my last release a new artist joins my library when Marilyn Manson released his first EP "Smells Like Children" on October 24, 1995. I only have one song off this EP, but it was the single that brought Marilyn Manson into the mainstream. But who is Marilyn Manson? His real name is Brian Warner, but every original member's stage name is the first name of a female pop star combined with the last name of a serial killer, and so Marilyn (Monroe) (Charles) Manson was born. He is just the lead singer of the band, formed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and is joined by fellow original members Daisy Berkowitz (guitars) and Madonna Wayne Gacy (keyboards). Joining the band are new bassist Twiggy Ramirez and drummer Ginger Fish. Marilyn Manson have a cult following and due to their strange appearances and live shows rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, but their cover of the Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" is pretty interesting. It's at least half the speed as the original and it sounds way darker and creepy. Manson sings overtop in a creepy but solid voice and after a quiet first verse things get louder and more metal after that. The guitar solo is pretty good and Manson sings in a few different creepy voices that all sound pretty dark. A cool cover for sure, and not the last one we'll hear by Marilyj Manson either!
