March 16, 2004 - The Other Side

Almost two months since my last release and just under a year since "Faceless", Godsmack released an acoustic EP titled "The Other Side" on March 16, 2004. This EP is largely acoustic versions of well-known Godsmack songs, but I only have two songs off of it and they are both new songs, and they were also the only singles released off the EP! The first one is called "Running Blind" and Sully Erna leads the way with a slow, smooth and solid acoustic guitar riff. Erna's grunge-y voice sounds pretty decent and fitting for this style and it's a bit like their namesake's acoustic EPs (Alice In Chains also does some great acoustic work). After a couple rounds Erna hits a couple higher notes en route to a decent little acoustic solo and this is a pretty well done song, I'm not shocked at all it was a successful single. The other original song is called "Touché" and it's driven by a faster acoustic riff that is pretty cool as Erna holds lots of long notes overtop. There's a couple guest singers in the chorus as they take turns repeating the same line and while it's a tad repetitive they actually do a pretty good job of keeping things interesting with different inflections and emphasis. This is another no-brainer of a single that isn't very flashy by any means, but it's very smooth and well put together and both these songs are worthy additions to the library.

August 28, 2001 - Puddle Of Mudd and Come Clean

On the same day as my last release a new band briefly joins my library when Puddle of Mudd released their debut album "Come Clean" on August 28, 2001. But who is Puddle of Mudd? They are a four-piece post-grunge band from Kansas City, Missouri consisting of lead singer/guitarist Wes Scantlin, guitarist Paul Phillips, bassist Doug Ardito and drummer Greg Upchurch. I'm not a huge Puddle of Mudd fan, I only have two songs by them in my library, but they are both off this album and were both succesful singles. The first one is called "Blurry" and it's got a smooth and catchy light guitar riff that drives the song and Scantlin sings in a solid grunge-y voice overtop. They ramp nicely from the verse to the chorus and it's a nice heavy chorus with some louder guitars and a solid chorus sung by Scantlin. July 24, 2001 - Avenged Sevenfold and Sounding The Seventh Trumpet

It's a double release day! On the same day as my last release another new band joins my library when Avenged Sevenfold released their debut album "Sounding The Seventh Trumpet" on July 24, 2001. But who are Avenged Sevenfold? They are a four-piece metalcore band from Huntington Beach, California consisting of Justin Sane (bass, piano), James "The Rev" Sullivan (drums, percussion), Zacky Vengeance (guitars, backing vocals) and M. Shadows (lead vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards). Avenged play an interesting mix of heavy metalcore with screaming vocals, but also a very accesible style of metal with singing at others. 2002 - Storaged Melodies

With no official release date other than the year 2002, a group of System Of A Down fans online created an unofficial B-side album called "Storaged Melodies". It contains a whopping 17 songs that are not on any studio release, including outtakes, several covers and also a few songs by other artists that feature System members. Let's check out some B-side System! The first song is called "Storaged" and it's only just over a minute long. It alternates between a couple really slow notes and Serj Tankian singing slowly to match, and firing into a heavy, fast and very loud riff with Serj yelling quickly to keep up. The dramatic shifts between slow and quiet work really nicely and while I can see why this was a B-side, I think it's a pretty cool one at just 1:21.
