September 23, 2003 - The Long Road

A week after my last release and two years since "Silver Side Up", Nickelback released their fourth album "The Long Road" on September 23, 2003. I'm still not a huge Nickelback fan, but I do have a few songs off this album, all of them pretty succesful singles. The first one is "Someday" and it's driven by a pretty catchy acoustic guitar riff and Chad Kroeger sings a solid post-grunge verse overtop. The loud, electric guitars come in for the chorus and Kroeger sings a decently catchy, very accessible chorus overtop. It's easy to see why this was a huge single as it's very easy smooth and easy to get into. After the next round we even get a brief guitar solo, and while it fits the mood nicely it's pretty basic. Still an undeniably catchy tune! My next big single is "Feelin' Way Too Damn Good" and it's also driven by a catchy acoustic guitar. Kroeger sings about how something has to go wrong because everything is going so well with this girl and just like the last one the electric guitars enter for a much louder chorus that is decently hard rock and Kroeger sounds solid singing the chorus as well. After another sappier verse and loud chorus there's a do-do-do part that I find doesn't add anything at all, then they just hit reset and do it all one more time. Another no-brainer of a single, and it was decent, but definitely not anything too amazing. My last song off this album is "Figured You Out" and Kroeger dives right in with "I like your pants around your feet" followed by a stop-and-start main guitar riff that is pretty solid. Kroeger nicely sings about this girl that is fun in bed but a bit of an annoyance the rest of the time and I'm not shocked this was extremely accessible and relatable as well! The chorus is pretty catchy as well with some more nice hard rock guitar and this is definitely my favourite song on the album, but that's not saying much! I still find myself headbanging along to this one and it's yet another undeniably solid single from these Canadian rockers!

The first one is called "Blurry" and it's got a smooth and catchy light guitar riff that drives the song and Scantlin sings in a solid grunge-y voice overtop. They ramp nicely from the verse to the chorus and it's a nice heavy chorus with some louder guitars and a solid chorus sung by Scantlin. July 24, 2001 - Avenged Sevenfold and Sounding The Seventh Trumpet

It's a double release day! On the same day as my last release another new band joins my library when Avenged Sevenfold released their debut album "Sounding The Seventh Trumpet" on July 24, 2001. But who are Avenged Sevenfold? They are a four-piece metalcore band from Huntington Beach, California consisting of Justin Sane (bass, piano), James "The Rev" Sullivan (drums, percussion), Zacky Vengeance (guitars, backing vocals) and M. Shadows (lead vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards). Avenged play an interesting mix of heavy metalcore with screaming vocals, but also a very accesible style of metal with singing at others. November 6, 2001 - As I Lay Dying and Beneath The Encasing Of Ashes

Two weeks after my last release a new band joins my library when As I Lay Dying released their debut album "Beneath The Encasing Of Ashes" on November 6, 2001. But who is As I Lay Dying? They are a four-piece metalcore band from San Diego, California consisting of lead singer Tim Lambesis, guitarist Evan White, bassist Noah Chase and drummer Jordan Mancino. As I Lay Dying are part of the budding metalcore scene and they play a very heavy style of metal and Lambesis does all screaming vocals. Let's see what AILD is all about! The album begins with the title track "Beneath The Encasing Of Ashes" and things start off with a pretty fast pace led by some heavy, chugging guitars and bass. They break things down not long after getting started and most of the song is at this slower, very brutal sounding pace.
