September 11, 2001 - Nickelback and Silver Side Up
It's a double release day! On the same day as my last release a new band joins my library when Nickelback released their third album "Silver Side Up" on September 11, 2001. But who is Nickelback? They are a four-piece post-grunge band from Hanna, Alberta consisting of new drummer Ryan Vikedal and original members Ryan Peake (rhythm guitar) and brothers Mike (bass) and Chad Kroeger (lead vocals, lead guitar). I'm not a huge Nickelback fan, but I do have two songs off this album that really broke them into the mainstream. The first is "Never Again" and it's got a slow but decently catchy main riff with some cool bass by Mike Kroeger. Chad sings a solid verse in his very post-grunge voice about watching his Dad beat his Mom and it's pretty dark! Somehow they make this dark subject matter into a bonafide single with a super catchy chorus! The faster bridge part after the first couple rounds sounds pretty cool as well and it's hard not to like this dsrk yet groovy tune. The other song I have is still one Nickelback's biggest songs, the megahit "How You Remind Me". They dive right into a catchy verse with some nice light guitars and Chad singing a pretty smooth and catchy verse. They build up nicely into the louder chorus and things continue to sound super catchy and pop-y, it's hard not to sing along to such a catchy chorus! After a couple rounds they slow things down as Chad sings annie verse by himself, then the band comes back on for a loud and catchy finale of jamming out the catchy chorus. It's a little repetitive by the end, but it's an undeniably catchy and solid song.
