July 25, 2000 - Treble Charger and Wide Awake Bored

A week after my last release a new band joins my library when Treble Charger released their fourth album "Wide Awake Bored" on July 25, 2000. But who is Treble Charger? They are a four-piece pop-rock band from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario consisting of drummer Trevor McGregor, bassist Rosie Martin and guitarists/vocalists Bill Priddle and Greig Nori. I'm not a big Treble Charger fan, but they did have two succesful singles off this album, and I have both of them. The second and less popular (but still popular) single is "Brand New Low" and it's got a light but catchy main guitar riff and i' not sure who is singing, but it's a pretty standard pop-rock voice that is decent, but nothing too special. They do a nice job of ramping into a slightly louder bridge riff that takes us right to the loud and catchy chorus and both Priddle and Nori sing in the chorus and things sound pretty smooth and catchy, easy to see why this was a single. After another decent round, they quiet things down in a kind of unexciting break where a solo would've fit nicely, and then they predictably wrap things up. A decent song that is a worthy addition, but nothing too flashy. Their other single would become massively popular and it's called "American Psycho". They open with a taste of the super catchy chorus riff, and then nicely move into the first verse with one singer doing a good job on lead vocals and the other adding some echo-y backing vocals. McGregor does a nice drum fill as they build up to the chorus and it's just such a catchy and solid chorus, no wonder this song took off! Once again they slow things down midway through and I find it takes the air out of things a bit, but they nicely return to the main riff to predictably but solidly finish things off. Both these songs were pretty cool, but they are definitely the best two songs on the album.
