June 27, 2000 - Sum 41 and Machine Gun
A week after my last release a new band joins my library when Sum 41 released their debut EP "Half Hour Of Power" on June 27, 2000. But who is Sum 41? They are a four-piece pop-punk band from Ajax, Ontario consisting of frontman Deryck Whibley (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Dave Baksh (lead guitar), Jason McCaslin (bass) and Steve Jocz (drums, percussion). Sum 41 are still making a name for themselves at this point, but I do like one song off of this EP, a short song called "Machine Gun". Baksh plays a nice fast main guitar riff and Whibley sings a decent but not amazing verse. Jock plays some nice fast drums and Baksh delivers a short but cool guitar solo midway through. McCaslin follows with a nice bass riff and then we get a boring "na na na na" part, followed by a pretty good scream by Whibley! This song had it's highs and it's lows but it was mostly solid and a pretty good intro to Sum 41. More to come later!
