June 15, 1999 - Vertical Horizon and Everything You Want

It's a triple release day! On the same day as my last two albums a new band briefly joins my library when Vertical Horizon released their third album "Everything You Want" on June 15, 1999. But who is Vertical Horizon? They are a four-piece alternative rock band from Washington, D.C. consisting of frontman Matt Scannell (lead vocals, lead guitar, and some keyboards), rhythm guitarist Keith Kane, bassist Sean Hurley and drummer Ed Toth. I'm not a big Vertical Horizon fan as they are pretty pop-y, but I have their two biggest singles as my only songs by them and they're both pretty damn catchy. The first single is "You're A God" and Scannell plays a simple but catchy acoustic guitar riff and we hear his pretty standard pop-y vocals overtop that sound decent but nothing too special honestly. Things pretty sound catchy though and it rolls into an even catchier sing-along chorus. Scannell plays a decent little guitar break after the second chorus then they predictably finish things out with several more catchy choruses. It's hard not to like how smooth this song is, even though it's ultimately pretty tame. The other succesful single is the title track "Everything You Want" and it has a pretty catchy rhythm guitar riff and some simple but interesting keyboards overtop as Scannell leads another pretty damn catchy verse. The chorus is another perfectly simple and pop-y riff and these guys really did hit the jackpot with both these smooth singles. This song is more brooding and less upbeat than the first one, but it's still undeniably pretty good and both songs are definitely worthy additions to the library. That's it for Vertical Horizon though!
