September 22, 1998 - The Goo Goo Dolls and Dizzy Up The Girl
A month after my last release a new band briefly joins my library when The Goo Goo Dolls released their sixth album "Dizzy Up The Girl" on September 22, 1998. But who are The Goo Goo Dolls? They are a three-piece pop-rock band from Buffalo, New York consisting of original members Johnny Rzeznik (lead vocals, guitars) and Robby Takac (bass, backing vocals) as well as drummer Mike Malinin, who just joined this album. I'm not a big Goo Goo Dolls fan, but there are two songs (both singles) off this album that I have, starting with the less popular "Broadway". It's got a pretty catchy main riff with some solid light guitars and Rzeznik has a pretty good, made-for-radio voice. It's hard not to tap your foot along with this one and it's a pretty well put together pop/rock mix. It's not amazing, but it's a worthy addition to the library I think. The other song I have by these guys is the extremely famous "Iris" and it's a pretty sappy tune, but once again it's done really well. Rzeznik sings a soft verse to match the light and fluffy music and his more powerful singing in the chorus sounds pretty good and obviously was very well-liked by all sorts of people as this song became immensely popular. The strings add to the epicness/sappiness but even though it's obviously a love song everything sounds pretty epic. The middle section with the "solo" and more strings sounds pretty good and they wrap things up predictably with a final chorus. That's all we'll hear by The Goo Goo Dolls in my library, but both these songs were solid.
