May 9, 1995 - Clutch and Clutch
A month after my last release a new band joins my library when Clutch released their self-titled second album "Clutch" on May 9, 1995. I only have four songs off this album and am not a huge fan of theirs, but who are Clutch? They are a four-piece stoner rock band from Germantown, Maryland consisting of Neil Fallon (lead vocals), Tim Sult (guitars), Dan Maines (bass) and Jean-Paul Gaster (drums). Despite being a stoner I'm not a big fan of the stoner rock genre, but I do enjoy a few songs off this album. The first song I have is a two minute track titled "Animal Farm" and it's out first dose of Fallon's unique vocals. He isn't screaming (he's easy to understand still) but he has a pretty epic yelling voice that is instantly recognizable. He yells a couple solid verses before they end this short song with a pretty trippy solo that sounds crazy and interesting. Up next is "Droid" and it has a cool building intro that leads into a slow headbanger of a main riff with some catchy guitar and bass and Fallon sounding solid singing overtop. There's a cool little drum part by Gaster midway through before they play out the slow main riff to finish it off. The next song I have is "The House That Peterbilt" and it's driven by a pretty catchy guitar riff with Fallon yelling nicely overtop. There's a nice build-up to the solo with some cool bits from everyone and then a trippy and solid guitar solo that takes us right to the end. The last song I have is "Tim Sult Vs. The Greys" and Tim Sult is the guitarist, but I'm not sure who the Greys are! Maines lays down a coop bassline that keeps the pace and Sult switches between syncing up with him and playing some epic lead guitar parts. The whole four-plus minutes is instrumental and it's one big jam sesh with flashes of cool stuff on bass, drums, even some organ, and especially guitar. That is the end of my short introduction to Clutch and while it'll be a bit, we will hear more from them in the future.
