April 14, 1992 - ZZ Top: Greatest Hits and Viva Las Vegas
A month after my last release and a long nine years since their last appearance in my library, ZZ Top released a greatest hits album on April 14, 1992. There were two new songs on this greatest hits album and one of them is the last song I have by ZZ Top, a cover of Elvis Presley's "Viva Las Vegas". Billy Gibbons leads the way with a catchy rock and roll guitar riff and the lyrics are all about Las Vegas and gambling unsurprisingly. Gibbons sounds solid singing the verse and the chorus is just him shouting the name of the song a couple times. After another verse and chorus Billy sings a brief new part that sets the stage for the guitar solo and it's a simple but effective solo that fits the mood nicely. They segue nicely back into the main riff and after a final verse and chorus Billy does his best Elvis impression and then cues up another simple solo that slowly fades out until the song reaches it's end. It's not winning any awards, but I think it's a solid little cover and a worthy addition to the library. That's all for ZZ Top though!
