July 2, 1991 - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Learning To Fly

A little over a month since my last release a new band joins my library when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their eighth album "Into The Great Wide Open" on July 2, 1991. I have "Full Moon Fever" by solo Tom Petty, but this is my first song with him backed by his main band The Heartbreakers, the popular single "Learning To Fly". But who are Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers? They are a five-piece rock band from Gainesville, Florida and with Tom Petty on lead vocals and guitar, Mike Campbell also on guitar (who was also on "Full Moon Fever"), Belmont Tench on keyboards, Stan Lynch on drums and Howie Epstein on bass. This popular single is driven by a light and pop-y main guitar riff that just keeps happily rolling along throughout the whole song with it's uplifting sound. The rhythm section is very simple but Petty's voice sounds great overtop the pop-y main riff as he sings in a nice high voice. He goes even higher to sing the title of the song as they begin a very catchy chorus and this was radio gold as who couldn't enjoy this breezy verse and chorus? There's a "guitar solo" midway through, but it's really not that much of anything, and it's not long before they return to the main riff to predictably close things out. Not an amazing or awesome song, but certainly a catchy one.
