September 21, 1990 - The Razors Edge and Thunderstruck

Almost three weeks after my last release and a long nine years since their last appearance in my library, AC/DC show up again with the release of "The Razors Edge" on September 21, 1990. Phil Rudd has been replaced as drummer since I last wrote about AC/DC and Chris Slade is his replacement. This album was a revival of sorts for AC/DC and it was spearheaded by the only song I have off this album, the very succesful single "Thunderstruck". Angus Young opens the song with a pretty fast guitar riff that became one of AC/DC's most recognizable riffs. It's very catchy and pretty good and the whole band sings some wordless vocals in the background before Brian Johnson comes in with a few big "thunder!". The cool guitar continues into the verse as Johnson sings in his unmistakable voice, but aside from the cool lead guitar there's not a whole lot else happening, especially in a chorus that just has the name of the song yelled over and over. Angus delivers a decent guitar solo midway through and I think this song is definitely good, but definitely not great either. It's another wildly popular hit for these Australian rockers but for me it's another solidification of their mediocrity.
