October 9, 1990 - Testament and Souls Of Black
Eight days after my last release a new band briefly appears in my library when thrash metal band Testament released their fourth album "Souls Of Black" on October 9, 1990. The title track is the only song I have by these guys in my library, but who is Testament? They are a five-piece thrash metal band from Berkeley, California consisting of lead singer Chuck Billy, guitarists Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson, bassist Greg Christian and drummer Louie Clemente. I'm not a big fan of theirs but I do like this one song that was also their lead single. Christian kicks things off with a pretty sweet bass riff and after he plays what's basically a bass solo for an intro, the guitars come thundering in to form a catchy yet still nice and heavy main riff. Billy sings a decent verse overtop but although he sounds alright on this song he's not one of my favourite singers. The guitars and bass sound solid enough though and for a single this is a pretty metal song and it has a sweet guitar solo in the middle. It's a one-hit wonder, but it's at least a good one!
