February 28, 1990 - Eric Johnson and Cliffs Of Dover
Happy New Year and welcome to the 1990s! It's been a long three months since my last release but the new decade is finally rung in on February 28, 1990 when Eric Johnson released his second album "Ah Via Musicom", of which I have only one song. But who is Eric Johnson? He is a guitarist from Austin, Texas and also an occasional singer, but most of his music is instrumental. The only song I have off this album actually won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and it's called "Cliffs Of Dover". Johnson opens the song with a guitar solo and it sounds pretty sweet as he shreds things right from the get-go. After this cool opening solo he moves into the main riff and it's very upbeat and bouncy and almost impossible to not bop your head along with! It's a very cool main riff with some great guitar up and down the fretboard and it's quickly becoming easy to see why this won best rock instrumental, it's very catchy and filled with cool guitar. After a cool couple wordless verses and choruses Eric goes off of an extended solo and he does a fantastic job! Not only does it have snippets of shredding, but the whole thing matches the mood perfectly and sounds pretty great. I'm not a big Eric Johnson fan overall, but he hit the jackpot with this catchy and very cool song.
