August 25, 1987 - Permanent Vacation and Dude (Looks Like A Lady)
A month after my last release and a whopping 12 years since their last appearance in my library, Aerosmith released their ninth album "Permanent Vacation" on August 25, 1987. This album would be a commercial revival for Aerosmith and contained several hit singles, but I only have one song off of it, titled "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)". This is the last appearance Aerosmith will make in my library but this is a catchy song for sure. Steven Tyler's first vocals of the song are a "ahh, ahh" followed by the name of the song and despite this repeated phrase being a little uncreative, it's a really catchy chorus and Tyler's unique voice and antics make it very memorable. After this opening chorus they settle into a catchy main verse that has some horns mixed in with the standard rock setup. Joe Perry drives the verse with some decent guitar but it's the cool horns and Tyler's singing that really carries things. They play a couple solid verses before they return to the catchy chorus and things still sound very catchy as they roll on to another verse and chorus. They move smoothly into a short bridge and after Tyler yells "do me!" in increasing volume Perry goes off for a guitar solo. For such a commercial song, it has a fairly long solo and Perry does a pretty good job as he plays some cool guitar throughout, especially at the end of the solo. It leads back into the bridge part and Tyler delivers a really high-pitched "ack, ack, ack, ack, wow!" like only he can as they segue back into the chorus. They jam out the catchy chorus until the end of the song eventually fades out, but Tyler keeps things interesting with more crazy antics of his, including a really fast "gggggggg-go!" that sounds pretty good. This is the last hurrah in my library for Aerosmith but they did have one more very successful single left in them.
