June 18, 1985 - Dare To Be Stupid

Another long gap as three months have passed since my last release, as well as two years since the last release by this artist; "Weird Al" Yankovic released his third album "Dare To Be Stupid" on June 18, 1985, off of which I have two songs. "Weird Al" continues to parody various famous songs of the 80s and the first song I have turned out to be a pretty successful single, a parody of Madonna's "Like A Virgin". It's called "Like A Surgeon" and although I don't like the original song at all, I still appreciate how closely Weird Al has made his parody sound just like the original music. It's not the most exciting music, but it's the hilarious lyrics that we're here for as Weird Al sings about being a doctor fresh out of med school despite being a colossal idiot. "Like a surgeon, cuttin' for the very first time. Like a surgeon, organ transplants are my line." It's pretty silly but I think it's a funny parody and Al's keyboards sound just like the original song. After another verse and chorus we hear some surgical noises and beeping while Al whoa's along to the music and then it's back for a final verse. "It's a fact, I'm a quack. The disgrace of the AMA 'cause my patients die, yeah my patients die before they can pay". That's my favourite verse and they jam out the catchy chorus several times to end the song and we hear a heart rate monitor slowly fade to the long "beeeeeeeeeep" in a humorous end to the song. The only other song off this album I have is called "Yoda", a parody if the hit song "Lola" by The Kinks. The music is more enjoyable on this one as it's at least driven by some decent guitar, but once again it sounds just like the original, but with a Star Wars twist. It opens with the lines "I met him in a swamp down in Daegobah where it bubbles all the time like a giant carbonated soda. S-O-D-A soda" and that's a pretty good example of what this parody is all about. Weird Al makes all the lyrics about the famous Jedi and he makes it all flow perfectly along with this catchy song. It's got several funny lyrics in it, but just like the original the chorus gets boring pretty fast and they play it for way too long. There's a line about "making these movies 'til the end of time" and it wasn't hard to predict that that would come true! The final minute of the song is just the chorus but I enjoyed this parody as well.
