March 23, 1983 - ZZ Top and Gimme All Your Lovin'
Just two days after my last release a new band joins my library when ZZ Top released their eighth album "Eliminator" on March 23, 1983. This album was the band's most commercially successful and it spawned many hit singles, of which I have only one, the first single released "Gimme All Your Lovin'". But who are ZZ Top? They are a 3-piece rock band from Houston, Texas consisting of drummer Frank Beard, bassist Dusty Hill and guitarist/lead singer Billy Gibbons. I am not a big ZZ Top fan at all, but I do like this catchy rock song. "Gimme All Your Lovin'" is a made-for-radio hit that starts off with a simple drum beat by Beard and Gibbons plays a simple but catchy rhythm guitar riff as well as some cool lead guitar overtop. Gibbons begins fo sing the first verse and his voice sounds decent but I don't think it's anything that special. He carries the catchy verse and it leads right into the catchy chorus as Hill echoes Gibbons' simple lyrics and once you know them, it's hard not to sing along with them. They move into the next verse and after another sing-along chorus they shift nicely into a guitar solo. Gibbons doesn't go very fast, but he plays nicely along to the vibe of the song in a simple but smooth solo. After the solo they bring it back for another verse and chorus and after a nice little drum fill by Beard Gibbons delivers another guitar solo. It's along the same lines as the last one, but he spices things up a little bit playing some new cool stuff as they slowly start to fade until the song ends when the solo does in a nice touch. This is an undeniably catchy song, but it's one of only two I have by these simple Texan rockers.
