June 19, 1981 - Fire Of Unknown Origin and Burnin' For You

About seven weeks since my last release and a long five years since my last song by them, Blue Oyster Cult released their eighth album "Fire Of Unknown Origin" on June 19, 1981. After a few disappointing albums commercially, BOC returned to success with this album, spearheaded by the successful lead single "Burnin' For You" which is the only song I have off this album. Lead guitarist Donald Roeser leads the way with a catchy guitar riff as he plays overtop of some ahhing vocals before they settle into the first verse. The main riff is pretty simple but also pretty catchy as Roeser and bassist Joe Bouchard play some slow stuff and the former sings a light verse. They move into a nice bridge riff with some heavier guitar and some synths in the background by Allen Lanier that brings us to the catchy chorus. It's got simple, repetitive lyrics but the music sounds pretty good as they segue nicely back into the opening part and another verse. They reepeat the same formula as we hear verse, bridge and another chorus, then it's time for a guitar solo. Roeser plays a decent but not amazing solo that gets better as it goes on and it leads nicely into the bridge riff and it's chorus time once again. In this final chorus, Roeser tips off a short solo inbetween each singing of the title and these short solos we hear are pretty awesome! He really shreds it in this part and outdoes his earlier solo easily as they jam out this catchy chorus a few times and end it on an epic note. It's a pretty catchy song and Roeser's guitar work is pretty great at the end, but this will be the last we will hear of Blue Oyster Cult in my library. Until the next one-off!
