March 29, 1979 - Supertramp and The Logical Song

Just six days since my last release a new band briefly enters my library when Supertramp released their sixth album "Breakfast In America" on March 29, 1979. The only song I have by Supertramp is called "The Logical Song" but as I like to say it's a pretty good one. But who are Supertramp? They were originally a four-piece formed in London but have five members on this album. They consist of original members Rick Davies (vocals, keyboards) and Roger Hodgson (vocals, guitar, keyboards) as well as Dougie Thomson (bass), Bob Siebenberg (drums) and John Helliwell (saxophones, clarinets). "The Logical Song"  is driven by some nice piano by Davies and has Hodgson singing lead vocals. His voice is a very high one but it seems to fit the mood of this song pretty well. All the rhyming lyrics come off very nicely and the verse sounds pretty catchy. They move to a new bridge riff where Davies adds some nice background organ and Hodgson plays some nice guitar as well. After another verse Helliwell gets the spotlight as he plays a sweet saxophone solo! It sounds pretty great I think and his sax continues into the next bridge making it sound better for sure! Hodgson ascends his voice with each "who I am" and then for the final minute they continue the main beat while jamming overtop. Hodgson rambles along but it's Helliwell's sax that takes the lead again and again he plays some awesome stuff as this cool song fades to an end. There will be no more Supertramp in my library, but that was a cool song for sure.
