May 14, 1977 - Little Queen and Barracuda
Almost two months since my last release and almost two years since "Dreamboat Annie", Heart released their second album on May 14, 1977 titled "Little Queen" of which I have only the first song, "Barracuda". Heart had signed with a new record label and were ready to release a different album called "Magazine" but they had a contract with their original record label for two albums so they threw together this album to finish out that contract. "Barracuda" kicks off with a very iconic guitar riff by Roger Fisher that sounds really low. This deep-sounding riff carries this whole song and it's extremely catchy and memorable. It just rolls so well! Ann Wilson starts singing in her beautiful voice and the lyrics to this song are about the slimy sleazebags of the music industry and how they particularly treated women. Everything just sounds so smooth, especially Ann's calm and cool "Barracuda". She hits some pretty high notes as well and it's no surprise that this would become an instant rock classic. The guitar solo is simple but on point as Fisher plays just the right notes to keep the epicness going. The final minute has no lyrics and sounds a bit space-y as they mess with some cool guitar effects. They finish it off with some more cool guitar as it cuts out at the finish. This is surely a cool song and Heart seem capable of writing a good song or two per album. Until the next one!
