May 1976 - Fly Like An Eagle

Over two and a half years have passed since "The Joker" but in May of 1976 the Steve Miller Band finally released their ninth album "Fly Like An Eagle", of which I have the first two songs. Steve Miller is the only member remaining from last album and he now plays keyboards in addition to his usual guitar and lead vocals. Miller recruits new bassist Lonnie Turner and drummer Gary Mallaber to complete the 3-piece on this record. This album spawned several hit singles, including the title track which I remember hearing in the movie "Space Jam" as a young kid in the 90's. The first song on the album "Space Intro" is a short intro to this very cool, very catchy song. It's just over a minute long and as the same suggests it has some space-y very trippy keyboards that scale up in a cool way. This leads right into the title track "Fly Like An Eagle" which Miller opens with a pretty cool guitar riff. The awesome trippy keyboards continue into the song as we hear Miller sing a soft "doo doo da-doo". Turner plays a groovy bass line that carries the beat as Miller plays some cool guitar licks. Miller's voice isn't spectacular but it's pretty good as "time keeps on slippin' into the future". He plays some pretty snazzy keyboards throughout this chill song and it's hard not to sing along. Signs of a good single, which this certainly was. That is the last we'll hear from Steve Miller Band in my library though! Until the next single!
