January 6, 1976 - Peter Frampton and Do You Feel Like We Do
Happy New Year and welcome to 1976! About a month since my last release, my first one of this year is the first live album by Peter Frampton titled "Frampton Comes Alive!", released on January 6, 1976, which has the only song I have by Frampton in my library, "Do You Feel Like We Do". But who is Peter Frampton? He is a singer/guitarist from Beckenham, England and he does lead vocals and lead guitar. Joining him on this album is Bob Mayo (rhythm guitar, keyboards), John Siomos (drums, percussion) and Stanley Sheldon (bass). I'm admittedly not a huge Frampton fan, but this 14-plus minute epic is a must-have. Frampton kicks it off with a cool little guitar riff that drives this whole song. The rest of the band joins in to make a cool, heavier riff and we hear Frampton's vocals in the first verse. I don't think his voice is anything to go crazy over but it's not bad either and what we're really here for is his guitar playing. Sheldon's bass sounds pretty good in the background as the chorus is just the name of the song said twice. They still make it sound good though as the fans happily scream back this sing-along chorus. Mayo echoes the guitar riff on some keyboards and once he's got it Frampton takes off for his first guitar solo of this long song. He plays some really cool stuff and this is definitely his forte as he solos overtop of this solid main riff. After another verse and chorus it gets very quiet as Siomos plays a light drum beat. We hear some pretty sweet keyboards by Mayo and Frampton gives him the credit as he goes off for a fantastic little solo! Frampton sings the name of the song and gets a roaring reply from the audience as they've also started to keep time with clapping. Peter starts his second solo of the song and he slowly eases his way into this one, starting with some cool slow stuff and escalating into some really great faster stuff! Frampton finally breaks out the talk box that would become synonymous with this epic song and it sounds pretty cool! The distorted vocals sound amazing in this song and Frampton's trippy guitar playing is phenomenal. This is another thing you just have to listen to as "robot-like voice and guitar", while somewhat accurate is an insult really to how great this whole part sounds. They segue really nicely back into the earlier hard rock riff as the rest of the band rejoins. Back to "normal electric guitar" again as Frampton continues to tear it up! He plays some more really great guitar in this bit as he shows he has some real skill with the guitar! It culminates in a grand rock and roll flourish ending and this has been a fantastic 14 minutes. A great way to kick off the new year!
