July 1975 - Sweet and Ballroom Blitz
A long 3 months have passed since my last release, but in July of 1975 a British band called Sweet released their third album "Desolation Boulevard" which includes the only song I have by Sweet, "Ballroom Blitz". But who are Sweet? They were a 4-piece glam rock band from London, England consisting of lead singer Brian Connolly, guitarist Andy Scott, bassist Steve Priest and drummer Mick Tucker. I am really not a fan of glam rock, or Sweet for that matter, but they did manage to make one song that would pay the bills forever. It begins with Connolly doing a little role call before they kick into the main riff that carries the song. It's led by some simple guitar, but it is quite catchy. When Connolly's voice gets all high and crazy, it sounds pretty great and he can really yell! The chorus is pretty rockin' and the whole song is based on some crazy gigs that Sweet performed in Scotland. Tucker plays some solid drums and Scott adds some nice guitar as this song certainly became a huge hit. It fades out with an alright guitar solo, but Connolly's vocals are the highlight for me. That's it for Sweet though, as they go down as pretty much a one-hit wonder.
