October 5, 1973 - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

On October 5, 1973 Elton John released his second album of the year with the double album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", of which I have only 2 songs: "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" and "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting". Both songs feature Elton on lead vocals and piano with Davey Johnstone on guitars, Dee Murray on bass and Nigel Olsson on drums. Recording engineer David Hentschel plays the synthesizer that dominates the beginning of "Funeral For A Friend", which is the first song on the album.

His epic synths sound pretty cool and Elton's piano sounds great as well as Johnstone plays some trippy guitar. Elton starts an epic new piano riff and he plays some awesome stuff that leads this part as the epic synths continue in the background. Some cool guitar signals a shift into the second half of the song, the "Love Lies Bleeding" section.
Elton plays another new, super catchy piano riff and finally he sings. His voice sounds pretty great, and both the piano and guitar sound really good in the verses. Elton plays a beautiful piano solo, Johnstone follows with a pretty good guitar solo, and they play one more verse, then rock out until the song fades out. Wow, what a fantastic song! The other song I have is called "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" and what a catchy guitar riff that is! Such a toe-tapper! Elton adds some great rock piano in the chorus and this song sounds awesome! Johnstone's guitar is great throughout, and the lyrics are about getting loaded drunk and startin' fights at the bar. They play the chorus a lot, but it sounds great so to don't really mind! Elton's yells sound wonderful and this is definitely a rockin' song! Both songs I have off this album are great, unfortunately a lot of it is slower, snappier stuff that I am not a fan of. These two are definitely worth having though, especially "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" which is a really great song.
