October 19, 1973 - Steve Miller Band and The Joker
Just 6 days after my last release, a new band is joining my library when the Steve Miller Band released the song "The Joker", the title track (and only song I have off the album) off of their eighth album which came out on October 19, 1973. But who is the Steve Miller Band? They began as a 5-piece rock band from San Francisco, but they are down to a 4-piece on this album, with the only original member remaining being frontman Steve Miller (guitar, lead vocals). He's joined by Gerald Johnson (bass), John King (drums) and Dick Thompson (organ). I'm not a huge fan of Steve Miller Band, but the title track is a very catchy and cool song. Miller plays a catchy guitar riff, as well as a cool slide guitar that sounds like a whistle. His singing is pretty good as well as he carries the whole song. Steve let's us know he's a "midnight toker" and plays a couple cool slow guitar solos. It's a cool song for sure, one I'm happy to have added to the collection.
