November 23, 1972 - Steely Dan and Do It Again

My final release of the year came out on November 23, 1972 when Steely Dan released the only song I have by them, "Do It Again" off their debut album "Can't Buy A Thrill". But who are Steely Dan? They began as a six-piece rock band from New York with members Donald Fagen (keyboards, lead vocals), Walter Becker (bass), Denny Dias and Jeff Baxter (guitars), Jim Hodder (drums) and David Palmer (vocals). "Do It Again" has lead vocals by Fagen and has Dias playing the electric sitar. The song opens with a catchy drum beat and a cool organ riff by Fagen. Fagen's voice sounds pretty sweet and there's some cool guitar in the background but it's pretty quiet. The electric sitar solo by Dias sounds pretty amazing! Cool stuff for sure, and it leads right into an equally awesome organ solo! It ends with some cool guitar as well and this is certainly a cool song. It's also my last of the year and begins the year-end wrap-up! 9 album this year is the same as 1969, but down from the 14 the previous two years. Still, it's going to be tough to pick a top 5 as there were lots of great albums this year. Picking the top song however, is a little easier.

Favourite song of the year: with an honorable mention to "Supper's Ready", the best song of the year has to be Thick As A Brick. The 43-minute epic by Jehtro Tull is a masterpiece and I think it is one of the best songs ever written. Every part flows so beautifully into the next, and there is just so much amazingness in this song, that would win pretty much every year. It's also telling in my rankings for 1972.

Top 5 albums of the year

1.Thick As A Brick by Jethro Tull
2. Machine Head by Deep Purple
3. Foxtrot by Genesis
4. Close To The Edge by Yes
5. Living In The Past by Jethro Tull

"Thick As A Brick" reigns supreme, and their compilation album was good enough to make the top 5 as well. Progressive rock is alive and kicking ass, and Jethro Tull are the kings this year. What will 1973 bring? I can't wait to find out!
