August 14, 1971 - Who's Next and Baba O'Riley
Two years after the release of "Tommy", a long gap in those days, the Who released their fifth album "Who's Next" on August 14, 1971. Pete Townshend had wanted to make another rock-opera to follow up "Tommy", but the idea fell through. They picked some of the better songs that could stand on their own and created this album, which I only have one song off of, just like their last one. The track I do have is called "Baba O'Riley" and it is a fantastic one. The lyrics sung by Roger Daltrey are about all the teenagers at Woodstock and how strung out they were, but it's the amazing skills of Townshend that make the song. He opens with an amazing organ solo and also plays the epic piano that rings in the first verse. Daltrey does most of the singing and he does a pretty good job. Townshend also plays the guitar on this song, and even sings a couple bars! Daltrey sings another verse before we hear an epic little guitar bit, with organ backing. The cool organ continues to back as we hear a guest violin solo that sounds pretty snazzy as well! Everyone speeds up to a grand finish, and this song is certainly a great one, even though I'm not a big Who fan. That's it for this month, tune in "next month" for more!
