February 1, 1967 - Jefferson Airplane and White Rabbit

Welcome to 1967, where my musical library begins to grow. The first non-Beatles song in this chronology is "White Rabbit", a song by Jefferson Airplane off their second album "Surrealistic Pillow", released on February 1, 1967.  But who is Jefferson Airplane? They were a six-piece rock band from San Francisco who were one of the pioneers of psychedelic rock. Their line-up on "Surrealistic Pillow" consisted of Marty Balin, Paul Kantner (vocals, guitar), Jack Casady (bass), Jorma Kaukonen (lead guitar), Spencer Dryden (drums) and Grace Slick (vocals, keyboards). "White Rabbit" has some very cool sounding guitar from Kaukonen, as well as some sharp snare drumming from Dryden that gives the song kind of an old western feel. Slick performs the vocals on this song and her voice is very captivating, very precise. The song's lyrics reference Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", and was written by Slick after an acid trip. It is a short, very cool little song, and the only one in my library by Jefferson Airplane. But don't worry, I don't think it will be nearly as long before we hear some more music not written by the Fab Four...
